On January 2, 2025, a disastrous blaze broke out at Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District. The blaze, which began around 1: 00 AM, spread quickly across the industry, destroying over 100 stores and displacing thousands of merchants.
Treyor fire trucks from various stations throughout the city were quickly mobilized by the Ghana National Fire Service ( GNFS ) to help with the blaze. However, Fire Service spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey ,speaking to JoyNews described the situation as “very serious”. He explained that despite firefighters ‘ initial efforts to contain the flames, their efforts were hampered by the lack of a fire hose and the exhaustion of their water source, which allowed the fire to resurrect. Despite the fire’s strength, Nartey confirmed that no serious injuries have been reported so far. He did point out that the fire’s size and difficult conditions on the ground could take up to two days to extinguish because of it.
Witnesses and traders, determined to keep their businesses, joined the rescue efforts, but the fireplace proved too frustrating to handle. Some investors have raised concerns of bad play, giving the impression that the fire was motivated by politics. Officials have confirmed that the cause of the incident is being looked into.
The damaged merchants are urgently requesting assistance in order to rebuild their businesses and stop future tragedies like this. The GNFS has reassured the people that they will support the uprooted traders and take the situation under control.
The tragic event has rekindled concerns about the ongoing fires at Kantamanto Market and underscored the need for better safety procedures and equipment to safeguard traders ‘ lives and the local area.
A fireplace pandemic that broke out around 1:00 AM on Thursday caused more than 100 stores to be destroyed in the Kantamanto market place.
