Transport Minister Barbara Creecy revealed that 1 502 people died in 1 234 crashes on South African roads during the festive season, with pedestrians making up 41% of fatalities.

“Our message to pedestrians is clear: avoid alcohol, ensure visibility at night, walk in safe areas and use designated crossings,” Creecy urged.

The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) criticised a lack of enforcement against reckless pedestrian behaviour.

Attorney Henry Shields said that South African law prohibits jaywalking, walking intoxicated and pedestrian access to freeways.

Police generals admitted limited manpower hampers enforcement, while the RAF warned against a rising scam involving pedestrians deliberately causing accidents to claim compensation.

Keyter also highlighted the ongoing danger of spike traps used to ambush motorists, urging continued vigilance.
