Peter Obi’s proposal for a ‘one-term presidency’ is causing a stir among stakeholders in the Northern region.

The commitment to a one-term presidency made by Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate and a prominent figure in the opposition coalition, has sparked debate among Northern stakeholders. Obi has consistently reiterated his intention to serve only a single four-year term if he is elected president in 2027. Recently, he emphasized that his dedication to a one-term presidency is steadfast. The former governor of Anambra State asserted, “In this context, I reaffirm my promise: I will serve just one term of four years if elected as President.” That promise is sacred. “I recognize that the deterioration of our society has rendered trust one of the rarest and most doubted resources.” A significant number of Nigerians, understandably, have lost trust in politicians’ promises. “However, amidst this atmosphere of distrust, there are still some individuals whose actions align with their statements – whose honesty is evidenced by their track record.” Hakeem Baba-Ahmed suggests that politicians often violate regulations and emphasizes the importance for Nigerians to scrutinize candidates more closely. In response to Obi’s statement, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Political Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, remarked that while politicians often disregard rules, the potential for change is ever-present. He urged Nigerians to adopt a more critical stance and demand accountability from their candidates as the 2027 elections approach. In an interview with DAILY POST, he expressed uncertainty regarding the political landscape, noting, “There are many variables, and politicians frequently flout the rules, but at this moment, anything can happen in our country. I hope as we near the elections, Nigerians will thoroughly question every candidate about their specific plans to address national security, the rising cost of living, and the challenges facing education and healthcare independence. It’s essential that Nigerians hold all candidates accountable, regardless of their party affiliation, and seek concrete promises from them.” Nigerians need to exercise caution in choosing their president and governors in 2027. A former presidential advisor cautioned that Nigerians must be vigilant in their choice of president and state governors for the 2027 elections. He emphasized the importance of selecting individuals with the integrity and determination to advocate for the nation’s welfare. Baba-Ahmed stated, “While I cannot predict their actions as President, it is crucial for Nigerians to be prudent in their electoral decisions in 2027. We require individuals who are honest and possess the political resolve to defend and safeguard the interests and resources of Nigerians. Indeed, four years is sufficient time for this.” If you present practical and pertinent ideas that align with your governing situation, assemble an effective team to collaborate with, and resist the urge to pursue power instead of effective governance, then four years can indeed be quite beneficial.
