Pretoria ā Fifty-two-year-old police captain, Johannes Daniel Jansen van Rensberg, has appeared before the Pretoria Magistrateās Court on charges of fraud worth R4million and theft worth R1 million.
Van Rensberg, who is attached to the finance section of the Protection and Security Service (PSS), appeared in court on Tuesday, 7 April 2026, and was granted bail of R50 000.
Allegations are that between March 2024 and March 2026, JVan Rensberg allegedly used his access to the finance system to manipulate the system and unlawfully withdraw money.
The accused allegedly ābooked outā cash for himself under the disguise that the money was meant for travelling expenses for close protectors attached to PPS.
However, after a suspicious transaction was detected on the system by the finance division, an internal investigation was conducted by the Financial Management Services.
A case was opened against the accused, and he was arrested on Easter Monday, 6 April 2026, at his place of residence.
During bail proceedings, the State did not oppose the release of the accused.
An affidavit by the Investigating Officer, Constable Byron Andrews, indicated that the accused has no previous convictions or pending cases, is not considered a flight risk, and is unlikely to interfere with investigations or public order.
The matter has been postponed to 30 July 2026 for further investigations
