The Nigerian Police Force has urged the public to report any inappropriate behavior by police officers to their superiors, specifically the Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states or the Commissioner of Police. This was stated in a notice titled ‘PUBLIC NOTICE: MISUSE OF NAME, OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE,’ released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, on Saturday. The statement advised the public to be cautious when approached by officers or individuals claiming to have connections with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, or any senior police personnel for exploitative purposes. “The Nigeria Police Force is troubled by the ongoing unprofessional behavior exhibited by some officers, which tarnishes the standards and image of the organization. Despite numerous warnings and disciplinary measures taken against those identified, some officers continue to engage in these disgraceful actions that diminish public trust. Even more concerning is the fraudulent use of the name and position of the Inspector-General of Police to carry out these illegal activities. The aim of this approach is to intimidate victims into thinking that the IGP is aware of and approves their illicit actions.” Consequently, victims frequently hesitate to report these incidents to authorities. “We encourage the public to report any wrongdoing by police officers to their superiors, the heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states, or the state’s Commissioner of Police.” Contact information for the CRU across all states has been previously released. “Members of the public are advised to be cautious when approached by officers or individuals claiming to have connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of seeking influence or favors,” the statement partially noted. The Force Spokesman then shared phone numbers where the public can file formal complaints against misbehaving police officers. “In such cases, we encourage you to report them immediately to the Nigeria Police Force using the following contacts: DCP Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076; ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147; CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head of the IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08069318238; SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC to the IGP – 08094712605.” The force guaranteed all Nigerians that it is dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of integrity and professionalism. It encouraged collaboration between the NPF and the public by urging them to report any suspicious activities to help ensure that justice and fairness are upheld consistently.
