Police intercept 14-year-old in Lagos Airport stowaway attemptĀ

The Airport Police Command at Murtala Muhammed International Airport intercepted a 14-year-old boy over a suspected stowaway attempt on Monday.

This is contained in a statement by ASP Mohammed Adeola, Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Police Command, Lagos, on Monday.

Adeola said the minor was discovered on the airport tarmac while attempting to gain unlawful access beneath an aircraft.

He described the act as ā€œa serious breach of aviation security protocols within a highly sensitive operational environment.ā€

According to him, preliminary findings showed the boy entered a restricted area without authorisation.

He added that the act contravened Sections 2 and 3 of FAAN regulations and was consistent with a stowaway attempt.

ā€œUpon interception, the minor was taken into protective custody in line with due process and established child protection procedures.

ā€œHis parents were promptly notified, and all protocols observed, including conducting the interview in their presence.

ā€œThe Command ensured the minor received appropriate care, support and welfare considerations throughout the process,ā€ he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Olufunke Ogunbode, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to safeguard aviation infrastructure.

She described the airport as a critical national asset requiring strict adherence to security regulations at all times.

Ogunbode stressed due process would be followed and urged parents to monitor children, especially around restricted, high-risk environments such as airports.

She said the case would follow juvenile justice procedures, with the minor to be charged before the appropriate juvenile court.

She reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining safety, security and order, while upholding the rights and welfare of all individuals, particularly minors.
