The Inspector General of Police’s office has sounded the alarm about some police officers misusing the IG’s office to extort the public. This information was shared in a press statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who expressed concern over the ongoing unprofessional behavior of a few officers that damages the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. Adejobi pointed out that despite numerous warnings and disciplinary measures, some officers continue to engage in disgraceful actions that undermine public trust. He emphasized that it is particularly worrying that certain personnel are fraudulently using the name and authority of the Inspector General to carry out illegal activities, aiming to intimidate victims into thinking that the IGP endorses their wrongdoing. Consequently, victims frequently hesitate to report these incidents to authorities. “We encourage the public to report any wrongdoing by police officers to their superiors, the heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states, or the state’s Commissioner of Police.” “The contact details for the CRU in every state have been shared before,” he stated. In light of this, ACP Adejobi urged the public to be careful when interacting with officers or individuals who claim to have ties with the IGP or any high-ranking officer to gain influence or favors. He also encouraged the public to report such incidents to the Nigeria Police Force immediately using the following methods: DCP Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076. ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Public Relations Officer of the Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147. CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head of the IGP Special Investigation Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja – 08069318238. SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC to the IGP – 08094712605, stated, “The Nigeria Police Force promises all Nigerians that it is dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of integrity and professionalism.” He stated, “We urge the community to help us by reporting any suspicious activities to uphold justice and fairness at all times.”
