The Police Special Fraud Unit, PSFU, has issued a warning to individuals planning to travel abroad, urging them to strictly follow official procedures when applying for visas.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, PSFU spokesperson DSP Ovie Ewhubare highlighted the increasing risks of visa-related scams targeting applicants.
He called on the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters posing as embassy officials or travel agents.
According to DSP Ewhubare, scammers often create fake websites, send urgent messages, or claim they can expedite visa approvals in exchange for payments through unofficial channels, including personal bank accounts and gift cards.
Recently, law enforcement in Lagos State arrested a fraud syndicate operating in the Ago-Okota area for allegedly defrauding the public of over N500 million.
The suspects, aged 23, 25, 27, and 36, were apprehended after credible intelligence and multiple complaints from victims.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the group operated under the guise of an educational consultancy and targeted applicants seeking Canadian and Australian work visas, defrauding over 100 people in the process.
Ewhubare advised travellers to be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed visas, unusually fast processing, or requesting payments through unofficial channels.
He emphasized that legitimate visa applications are processed only via recognised embassies, high commissions, or authorised platforms.
He further warned that unsolicited messages, social media contacts, or emails urging applicants to act quickly or provide personal information are red flags of potential scams.
According to him, requests for upfront payments without proper documentation or instructions to submit false information are also strong indicators of fraudulent activity.
To avoid falling victim, Ewhubare encouraged travellers to confirm visa procedures directly through official embassy websites or government-approved agents and to report any suspicious activities immediately to the authorities.
He stressed that adherence to due process remains the most reliable way to safeguard against fraud.
