Pont Émile Badiane de Ziguinchor: 46 years of existence, an urgent reconstruction is required

The Pont Émile Badiane, inaugurated on 19 February 1979, celebrates today its 46th anniversary. At 640 metres long, it was a strategic axis essential for the circulation and economic development of the Casamance. However, nearly half a century later, its state of advanced decay threatens the security of users and hampers regional growth.Despite repeated warnings, previous governments have not taken the necessary actions to remedy this critical situation. The current President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, listed the reconstruction of the bridge among the priorities of his Plan DIOMAYE pour la Casamance. Although this initiative is encouraging, it is imperative that concrete measures be taken without delay to avoid a catastrophe similar to the sinking of the Joola. The Casamance deserves a modern and secure bridge, at the height of its economic and social potential.
