Product Recall: Health Products Regulator Recalls Batches Of ‘Citro-Soda Regular’

Johannesburg – The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has recalled specific batches of Citro-Soda Regular following a potential contamination risk identified at the Adcock Ingram Clayville manufacturing facility in Johannesburg.

SAHPRA said the recall was limited to the affected batches of Citro Soda Regular produced at the Adcock Ingram Clayville facility, as outlined in the recall listing below:

  • Citro-Soda Regular 60 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 120 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 4 g x 30 Sachets

At a media briefing on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, SAHPRA said during inspections, the regulator found:

  • Metal fragments and black residue on production equipment
  • Damaged, rusted machinery and pieces of broken conveyor belts
  • Inadequate powder control and dust removal systems, allowing particles to spread
  • Lack of proper cleaning procedures and accumulated residue in machines
  • No suitable systems to prevent contamination

SAHPRA said these issues raised concerns that foreign material could have entered the product, posing a health risk to consumers.

The recall was limited to affected batches (mainly those with batch numbers starting with “C” and expiry dates on or before November 2027).

SAHPRA said other Citro-Soda variants (such as Cranberry) and products made at different facilities are not affected.

Consumers are advised to check batch details and return affected products for a refund.
