
The Governing Council of the Federal University Dutse, FUD, has approved the appointment of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
This was contained in a press statement signed by Abdullahi Yahaya Bello, Director, Public Affairs issued to newsmen.
He said the approval was granted at the 4th Governing Council Extraordinary Meeting held on December 13, 2025, with the appointment taking effect from February 10, 2026.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, OFR, NPOM, said the appointment followed a rigorous and transparent selection process.
According to him, 21 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed, at the end of which Professor Gumel emerged as the most qualified candidate.
Professor Abdulraheem congratulated the Vice-Chancellor designate and prayed for divine guidance and wisdom as he assumes the leadership of the institution.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Gumel expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity and thanked the Governing Council, the joint selection team, the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, and the entire university council for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to consolidate the achievements of the current administration and work towards further development of the university.
Professor Gumel is an alumnus of the University of Malaya, Malaysia, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Biotechnology and a PhD in Industrial Biotechnology with specialization in Biocatalysis and Bioprocess Technology in 2009 and 2013, respectively. He also completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the same institution in 2014.
In addition to his academic qualifications, he holds a Professional Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA), an Advanced Diploma in Education, a Diploma in Data Processing and Information Technology, and a Certificate in Advanced Digital Appreciation Training (ADAPTI).
An award-winning scholar, Professor Gumel graduated with distinction in his PhD programme and is an international researcher with two international patents registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.
He has over 45 publications in reputable journals, book chapters and conference proceedings, and has authored four books. He has supervised several postgraduate and undergraduate students across different levels.
Professor Gumel is a registered biotechnologist and a member of several national and international professional bodies. He also serves as a research consultant to Alpha Sights, London, and sits on editorial boards of international peer-reviewed journals. He has attracted multiple research grants to the university.
He joined the services of Federal University Dutse in 2015 and has held various academic and administrative positions, including Level Coordinator, Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator, Head of Department, Dean of Students Affairs, and currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Central Administration.
A seasoned administrator and team player, Professor Gumel has received over 34 awards and recognitions for his contributions to the university community. He has participated in conferences and workshops across the United States, China, Europe, and Asia.
Professor Gumel is married with children.
