Project “Mbeubeuss 2”: more than 29 arrests after the clashes

At Mbeuth, an agricultural village of the commune of Bambilor, anger mounted against the project of waste treatment centre, nicknamed “Mbeubeuss 2”. Tensions have escalated into clashes, leading to the arrest of more than 29 people. According to PressAfrik, the inhabitants accuse the PROMOGED (Programme de modernisation de la gestion des déchets solides) of wanting to impose the project without any prior consultation. They relate a violent intervention of the forces of order: descentes dans les maisons, civilians frappés, et use massif de gaz lacrymogènes, including à l’intérieur des habitations. The population, traumatized, denounces the contempt and brutality of the authorities.. Le collectif citoyen states that it is not opposed to the project per se, but refuses its implantation on agricultural land essential to the survival of more than 700 farmers. “What is being imposed on us is a social and ecological catastrophe”, denounces Saliou Ndiongue, pointing to the lack of dialogue and environmental impact study. The project’s managers put forward the creation of 235 jobs, of which only 100 are reserved for the inhabitants of the neighbouring localities (Bambilor, Mbeuth, Diamniadio, Ndoyène et Sébikotane), the rest being intended for workers from Dakar. A distribution considered unfair by the local farmers.
