Property worth N1.59bn, two lives lost to fire in BauchiĀ 

Bauchi State has recorded two deaths and property losses totaling N1.59 billion due to fire incidents between January and December 2025, the Federal Fire Service has revealed.

Public Relations Officer of the State command, Umar Lawal, while reeling out the statistics on Monday, noted that the service also saved four lives and property worth N2.86 billion across 167 fire incidents during the same period.

He explained that the fires affected a wide range of targets, including public and government buildings, private homes, educational institutions, markets, petrol and gas stations, as well as vehicles.

A breakdown of the losses revealed that properties worth N23 million were lost while N855.1 million was saved in 10 incidents affecting public and government buildings. Private residences lost N605 million, with N1.4 billion saved in 80 incidents.

ā€œEducational establishments also recorded N120 million in losses and N200 million in property saved. Markets lost N45 million and had N90 million saved in five fire incidents. Petrol and gas stations lost N23.7 million while N53 million was saved in 15 incidents. Vehicles were affected in 15 fire outbreaks, with N70 million destroyed and N33 million salvaged.ā€ he disclosed.

Lawal attributed the majority of the fires to electrical equipment malfunctions, power surges, illegal storage of petroleum products, accidents, and dustbin fires.

He advised residents to handle electrical appliances with care, avoid overloading circuits, and ensure proper storage of flammable materials to prevent fire outbreaks.

ā€œFire safety is crucial in every aspect of human activity. Preventing fire outbreaks protects lives, property, and the environment we depend on,ā€ Lawal said.
