The residents of Maradun, the hometown of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, are living in fear after receiving a threatening message from a notorious bandit leader named Jummo. Reports indicate that Jummo has demanded a ransom of ₦20 million, warning that if it is not paid, he will carry out a violent attack on the town. In an audio message directed at the community, he insisted that his men be allowed unrestricted access to local markets and the movement of their cattle without interference, claiming this is essential for the safety of residents when accessing their farms. “There is nothing stopping us from attacking Maradun,” he warned, adding, “I can rally support from over 100 other bandit leaders, and we can seize Maradun whenever we choose.” He went on to state that if the ₦20 million “protection fee” is not paid, the community should abandon any farming efforts, as his group would prevent access to agricultural lands. “Our members will start monitoring the region.” Farmers will return to their homes. He stated, “Land cultivation will not be permitted without payment.” This warning has ignited anger and resistance among the community. Numerous residents have dismissed the notion of collecting funds to satisfy criminals. A local farmer, who spoke with our correspondent, expressed, “No one is willing to consider the idea of compensating this terrorist.” The local newspaper, Blueprint, reported that “we will not engage in negotiations with criminals.” He urged both the Zamfara State government and the Federal Government to take immediate and firm measures to remove the armed groups that are taking refuge in the Bayan Ruwa area, which he described as a sanctuary for terrorists.
