The City of Ekurhuleni reminds all spaza shop owners and food-handling traders of the looming registration deadline for spaza shop registration which is February 28. This is a crucial opportunity to ensure compliance with local regulations.

Encouraging shop owners to do the right thing, the MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate Nomadlozi Nkosi emphasises that local businesses must take up space and ensure they are compliant.

“Doing so not only enhances the business but also contributes to boosting the township and local economy while ensuring that they keep their business afloat within the laws of the land.”

Nkosi says the city is very optimistic about the future of township economy and at the centre of the success of this economy is small businesses like spaza shops.

“That is why we are calling spaza shop owners to work with us to create a thriving community. Of critical importance is to ensure that our businesses provide quality and safe products to our people, especially considering the recent history of cases of food poisoning which resulted in this very process being undertaken in the first place,” stresses Nkosi.

Nkosi says the city encourages business owners who have not yet registered to still come forward by going to their nearest customer care centres which are open from Monday to Friday from 08:00 until 16:30. To register, owners must submit their completed applications along with the necessary documentation at their nearest customer care centre.
