A maritime tragedy has rocked the city of Saint-Louis, Saturday last, with the capsizing of two pirogues at the level of the breach, resulting in the death of five fishermen and leaving four other ports missing. The body of one of the occupants has been found, reported Mamadou Sarr, communication officer of the local Committee for Small-scale Fishing (CLPA). This tragic incident raises serious concerns about safety at sea and the observance of the prevention directives. Despite the warning issued by the Agence nationale de l’aviation civile et de la météorologie (ANACIM) concerning a dangerous wave, signalled by a red flag, some fishermen defied the ban. “These warnings were not respected, which led to this catastrophe”, lamented Mamadou Sarr. This tragedy once again highlighted the risks associated with the crossing of the breach and the urgency of raising awareness of safety measures to protect fishermen.
