SAPS raises alarm over imposters posing as cops

Brakpan SAPS has issued a warning to the public to be vigilant of criminals pretending to be police officers, who hijack and rob motorists.

“There has been reported cases of these criminal activities taking place along the R23/Heidelberg Road and the R554 whereby motorists are stopped by the occupants of different motor vehicles.

“The occupants are dressed in police uniform and at times the vehicles are fitted with blue lights,” said Brakpan SAPS communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“A white VW Amarok with a canopy and registration number DX17YK GP and a white Ford Ranger with an unknown registration number were identified by victims as used in the commission of these crimes.

“The criminals hijack, kidnap, and force victims to withdraw and transfer money from their bank accounts.

“Criminals are now using the trusting nature of road users and many fall prey because they do not want to get into trouble by arguing or resisting cooperation with the police.”

According to Buthelezi, these criminals may even create fake roadblocks to ensure they have power and control.

“Crime is an ever existing phenomenon in our country and almost impossible to run from. Knowing your rights as a driver when pulled over by the police, or fake police in this instance, can help you determine the danger of the situation,” she continued.

She provided the following tips:

• Assess the situation

Check the uniform, especially the name tag. Request an identification card.

• Do not stop at isolated areas for anything.

• Drive to the nearest police station or any public place where you can be safe.

• Press that panic button, and use your cellphone to dial any emergency number if you are being pursued.

“Remaining vigilant is not simply a good idea. It’s a necessary survival strategy,” added Buthelezi.

Brakpan SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo condemned the ongoing criminal activities in the name of the SAPS and assured the public that police members will continue serving with pride, dignity and integrity.
