​Senegal: 65 years of independence, a nation shaped by its jambar 

  On 4 April 1960, a historic turning point occurred for Senegal, which gained independence after decades of struggle for emancipation. Since then, the country has asserted itself as a nation of resilience, progress and pride. In 65 years of history, exceptional men and women, our Jambars (heroes), have contributed to forge a strong, sovereign and prosperous Senegal. 43: The Dawn of Independence and the Heritage of Senghor. The independence of Senegal, proclaimed on 4 April 1960, marked the end of French colonization and the country’s entry into a new era. Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first president of Senegal, embodies the hope and ambition of a people in search of freedom.
