Senegal and Mauritania have just reached a historic milestone in the energy sector with the export of their first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG), from the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field. This major milestone marks the official entry of the two countries into the world LNG trade. According to a communiqué from the Senegalese Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, this first expedition marks the culmination of several years of strategic planning and intergovernmental cooperation. Since the end of the year 2024, the GTA project has made remarkable progress, including the achievement of the “First Gas” threshold on 31 December 2024, marking the beginning of exploitation activities. On 9 February 2025, LNG production began on board the liquefaction vessel Gimi, moored at the Hub Terminal, thanks to the commissioning of one of the four liquefaction trains of the FLNG unit. The Ministry underlines that this success positioned Senegal as an emerging player on the global energy scene, and constitutes a strategic advance for the energy diversification of the sub-region. It is also part of a sustainable and equitable energy transition. The authorities nevertheless call for constant vigilance in order to guarantee the transparency, effectiveness and sustainability of the economic benefits for local populations. The GTA project is being implemented by a consortium composed of BP, Kosmos Energy, Petrosen and the Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH).
