Senegal: Receipt of two demining machines for the Casamance, fruit of cooperation with Japan

The Prime Minister, Ousmane SONKO, presided on Thursday over the ceremony of receipt of two demining machines acquired by the Centre national d’action anti mines du Sénégal (CNAMS). Financed to the tune of 2 billion CFA francs by Japan in the framework of the Programme de développement économique et social, this equipment is intended to accelerate the demining of contaminated areas in Casamance, a region marked by decades of conflict. In his address, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to Japan, underlining that this support testifies to the solidity of the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. It also reaffirmed the commitment of the Senegalese Government in the framework of the Diomaye Plan for the Casamance, which places the safe and dignified return of displaced populations at the heart of its priorities. “Peace and the reconstruction of the Casamance are imperatives for the sustainable development of Senegal”, he declared. For his part, the Ambassador of Japan to Senegal, Takeshi AKAMATSU, reiterated his country’s commitment to support reconstruction efforts in this southern region. “Japan will remain alongside Senegal to promote peace and development in Casamance”, he assured, putting forward the historic cooperation between the two countries. The donation of modern equipment will enable the CNAMS to intensify its demining operations, thus facilitating the return of the populations to their localities of origin and the resumption of economic activities in a region rich in agricultural and tourist potential.
