Senegalese diplomacy: Bassirou Diomaye Faye is redefining his strategy in the Sahel

The Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, made a major diplomatic reshuffle by appointing new ambassadors to Mali and Niger, two countries at the centre of tensions between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This highly strategic decision reflects Dakar’s desire to redefine its diplomatic positioning in a regional context marked by complex dynamics of the recomposition of alliances, of sovereignty claimed by certain States and of the repositioning of foreign powers. This choice could also be part of an approach to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the security, economic and political fields, at a time when the subregion faces major challenges related to instability, the fight against terrorism and ongoing geopolitical changes.
