The University of Jos community in Plateau State was thrown into shock and panic on Friday afternoon, following the discovery of a dead baby inside a drainage system connected to a female hostel in the Naraguta axis of the campus.
According to eyewitnesses, the shocking discovery, which sparked widespread outrage and emotional reactions among students and residents, came following complaints of a blocked sewage system and a foul smell by students, prompting authorities to invite maintenance workers to investigate the cause of the blockage.
A porter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the dead baby was apparently dumped in a toilet after being aborted by an unknown female student.
She stated that the shocking incident unfolded after the plumbers who were called in to carry out repair works on the dysfunctional toilet system discovered the dead baby.
She said that upon breaking through the pipes to identify the source of the obstruction, the plumbers discovered the remains of a baby lodged within the drainage system.
The porter added that the development left many in disbelief, with students expressing shock over how such an incident could occur within the hostel environment.
Some students, who also spoke, expressed their dismay over the incident, while others called for a thorough investigation to identify the culprit and bring them to justice.
At the time of filing this report, the university authorities have yet to issue a statement on the strange discovery, and efforts to get the institution’s Public Relations Officer to comment were abortive as she did not answer calls nor respond to messages.
