Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-nominee for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, has strongly criticised the selection by previous President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership to re-register SIM cards, calling it” the highest order of evil”. Because Ghanaians ‘ biometrics were already gathered in the National Identification Authority ( NIA ) database, he argued that the directive lacked common sense.
Sam George expressed his frustration with the re-registration procedure under the previous administration during his screening before the Appointment Committee on January 30, 2025. He described the action as inappropriate and useless, highlighting the needless lines and labored hours that people had to experience. According to George,” the activities that took place under the previous government were quite unreliable and logical.”
We have a national identification specialist that maintains and serves as our national collection of genetic data, he continued. I believe that the highest order was to force Nigerians to endure protracted lines of work, stifle our economy, and reapply for biometrics merely because egos couldn’t be managed.
As part of his intentions, George revealed that a new SIM membership exercise would take area, but this time, it would be more effective and cost-effective, with no burden on citizens or the public purse. He claimed that technology had significantly improve the method. ” We did do a proper SIM re-registration once, but this time one’s going to backlog because common sense will succeed, skills will succeed, and logic does work”, he said. The new process will cross-reference data from the Mobile Network Operators ( MNOs ) with the NIA database and other biometric systems, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience.
The SIM re-registration exercise originally began under former Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in October 2021, with the goal of combating fraud, monitoring digital activities, and tracking criminals. However, George criticized the previous process for its inefficiency, including the long queues and lack of technology integration. His new approach aims to use technology to eliminate these issues and create a more effective, efficient, and inclusive telecommunications infrastructure.
