The World Social Work Day was established by the International Federation of Social Workers to recognise the contributions of social workers to society.

Duduza – The Emmaus Community Centre in Duduza, Eastern Corridor, was abuzz with melodies when scores of social workers, gleaming in their green and black colours, celebrated the most important day in their calendar year, World Social Work Day.
This day is observed annually on the third Tuesday in March to spotlight the social work profession and the vital role and contributions social workers have made in caring for the most vulnerable society.
The International Federation of Social Workers established the day to recognise social workers’ contributions to society. It was first celebrated in 1983 and has since become a notable date for issues like social justice, equality and well-being.
This day also acknowledges the value of social and social auxiliary workers’ work, who help people overcome many problems, from poverty to mental health issues.
The social work supervisor at the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Duduza service point, Lesego Mathebula, emphasised that social workers should prioritise people’s needs and act with integrity.
She said, “Let us always remember the solemn declaration, which reminds us of our commitment to serve. This year’s theme emphasises the importance of caring and respect in building stronger societies for a better future.”
A beneficiary of the foster care programme, Neo Sebiloane, sang praises to the social workers and thanked them for their support during a time of difficulty.
He said, “I am proud to stand here and testify that our social workers are a beacon of hope. The process we had to go through normally takes months, but I thank my social worker, Nozuko Mvula, who escalated my case, and I was helped in a matter of weeks.”
The event was celebratory, with another beneficiary, foster parent ‘Tshepo the Guitarist’, getting the crowd on their feet and singing.
