Springs SAPS issues warning to those who spread false information

The Springs SAPS is issuing a warning to everyone that the publishing, distributing, disclosing, transmitting, circulating or spreading of fake news is an offence and perpetrators may be prosecuted.
Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala says people should refrain from spreading unverified information as it could incite panic.
“This includes false information or fake news transmitted or shared on social media platforms.”
He adds that sharing and spreading false news is against the law and makes conducting police work even harder.
“When a story is spread, it creates a new narrative that could create a panic.
“This will undermine the efforts we take to prevent the issue from escalating.”
Tshabalala says every resident must keep themselves and their loved ones accountable to prevent the law from being broken.
“We fully understand that our residents will see a story and want to create awareness for it, so naturally they will want to share it so it receives the attention they believe the story deserves.
“We caution our residents to consult local news outlets or us as the police to verify any information before they share it.”
