Pope Leo XIV launched an appeal to the international community on Wednesday for a coordinated response to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. According to the Anadolu Agency, the Supreme Pontiff has urged the establishment of humanitarian corridors in the face of famine and violence that ravage the country. It also called for a “serious, sincere and inclusive” dialogue between the parties to the conflict in order to restore peace and dignity to the Sudanese people. The European Union is also calling on the Sudanese authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure that the Sudanese people are not left behind. This drama adds to a context already marked by violent fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.. These clashes have already caused more than 20 000 deaths and 14 million displaced persons according to the figures of the UN and local authorities, while American university studies put the figure much higher, at around 130 000 victims. The landslide, caused by heavy rains, affected a village located in a zone controlled by the SLM/A, a political-military movement operating in parts of Darfur also under the control of the RSF.
