Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have ended their strike, which lasted for three months.

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have ended their strike, which lasted over three months, and are set to return to classes on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT communicated this decision after an urgent meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. The union noted that the teachers received payments for the new minimum wage along with five months of overdue salaries on Tuesday, July 8, prompting the resumption. “All primary school teachers in the FCT are to return to work on Wednesday,” the union announced. The strike, which commenced in March, had significantly affected academic operations in primary schools throughout the FCT. The NUT decided to halt the strike following intervention by the FCT Minister, who engaged with key representatives to resolve the conflict. As part of the resolution, the government allocated N16 billion from the Area Councils’ portion of Internally Generated Revenue to pay salaries and settle some arrears. The union mentioned that a special committee would be established within two weeks to address remaining payments and develop a sustainable funding strategy. However, they warned that the strike could resume if the government does not meet its obligations as per the agreement. The union expressed appreciation to teachers for their patience and thanked traditional leaders, civil society groups, and others who provided support during the strike.
