Highlights from two operas by the composer and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard, titled CHAMPION and FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES. In 2021, Blanchard achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Black composer to debut an original opera at the Metropolitan Opera. Fire Shut Up in My Bones captivated audiences, and in 2023, he made waves once more with another innovative success, Champion. In partnership with Los Angeles Opera, The Soraya commissioned the world premiere featuring selections from both operas, with performances by Blanchard himself. The American trumpeter and film composer heads his own E-Collective as well as the Turtle Island Quartet, featuring baritone Justin Austin and soprano Adrienne Danrich. For over ten years, The Soraya has provided a venue for performing artists in Los Angeles. They consistently excel across various seasons, showcasing original performances, engaging in new collaborations, and achieving impressive milestones.
