Terrorism in the Sahel: Cheikh Tidiane Gadio calls for a coordinated regional response

Faced with the expansion of terrorism in the Sahel region, Cheikh Tidiane Gadio launches a cry of alarm. According to him, the Islamic Caliphate of the Sahel is taking shape, and the States of the region risk a collapse if they do not react quickly and collectively. For the former foreign minister, ECOWAS, even reduced to 370 million inhabitants after the departure of Mali, Burkina and Niger, remains a regional power with enormous strategic potential. It calls for the inclusion of countries such as Morocco, Mauritania and Chad in an enlarged security strategy capable of dealing with a now continental threat. “The Islamic State seeks an access to the sea. He advanced towards le Bénin. The Sénégal can no longer afford the illusion of distance”, he warns. Dr. Gadio recalls that jihadist groups are present today from the north of Mali to Mozambique, passing through Nigeria, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.
