The Akwa Ibom Assembly has allocated budget funds to address HIV/AIDS issues.

In light of the US government’s cessation of international funding, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has allocated sufficient budgetary resources to enhance HIV/AIDS intervention programs within the state. Moses Essien, the Chairman of the House Committee on Health, shared this information during a three-day stakeholders’ meeting in Uyo, which was organized in conjunction with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA). Essien, who represents the Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring and targeted actions by the Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of AIDS (AKSACA) and other partners. He voiced concerns regarding recent statistics that indicate Akwa Ibom has one of the highest rates of HIV in Nigeria, trailing only behind Benue and Rivers, and urged for united efforts among the government and relevant stakeholders to combat the virus. Additionally, he called for the implementation of a practical and ongoing strategic plan to reduce HIV/AIDS transmission in the state. Regarding the anti-stigma bill, Essien mentioned that it has been approved by the State Assembly and is pending the approval of Governor Umo Eno following a judicial review. He noted, “Once enacted, this bill will prevent discrimination against individuals living with HIV in public settings, including schools, workplaces, markets, and religious venues.” He praised AKSACA and NACA for coordinating the meeting, expressing belief that ongoing awareness efforts would enhance public determination and garner additional backing for addressing the epidemic.
