​The American Robert Francis Prevost is elected pope, he takes the name of Léon XIV 

  The conclave has rendered its verdict. American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. Aged 69, he chose to bear the name of Leo XIV, marking thus a new stage in the history of the papacy. Born in Chicago, Leo XIV becomes the first sovereign pontiff originating from the United States. His appointment came in a global context marked by numerous challenges for the Church.
