The Judge of Instruction of the High Court of Kolda, Cheikh El Hadji Malick Sy Mbaye, has ordered the lifting of the assignment to reside under electronic surveillance of the thirteen accused involved in the violent confrontations that took place in Medina Gounass on 17 and 18 June 2024, during the Tabaski festival. Placed under electronic bracelet since 28 January 2025 for a non-renewable period of six months, the persons concerned thus saw their freedom closely framed, their presence being continuously geolocalised within the religious city. This measure was intended to contain any resurgence of tensions and to preserve public order in this locality marked by deep community divisions after the tragic events. The mainlevée of this measure is similar to a liberté provisoire. The 13 defendants nevertheless remain justiciable and at the disposal of the judicial authorities. Their dossier is still under investigation and has not yet been viewed. They are prosecuted for serious crimes, namely: association of criminals, arson of dwellings, attempted murder, participation in an armed demonstration, illegal possession of weapons, among other charges. As a reminder, the confrontations of Médina Gounass, which occurred in the midst of the celebration of Tabaski, had caused the death of a man, D. S., aged 40 years, and 82 wounded, plunging the city into a vivid emotion and a worrying security instability.
