The Edo State Democratic Party has suspended four members of the State Working Committee due to accusations of inappropriate behavior.

The Social Democratic Party in Edo State has suspended four of its executives due to alleged misconduct. This announcement was revealed to the media on Sunday during a press conference in Benin City. The party’s state chairman, Elder Felix Obayagbon, delivered the press statement, which was co-signed by the state secretary, Mr. Hyacinth Esangbedo, and other members of the state working committee. Obayagbon reported that the disciplinary measures were implemented following a meeting of the State Working Committee in Benin City. According to DAILY POST, the suspended executive members faced accusations of wrongfully suspending the officially recognized State Chairman and State Secretary, among others. Obayagbon further identified the wrongdoings of the troubled executive members, which included holding unauthorized meetings contrary to party rules and making derogatory comments against the party and its leadership. “Additional violations comprised an alleged effort to move the State Secretariat without necessary approval, jeopardizing the party’s operational framework.” “The purported forgery of the party’s letterhead and the signatures of the State Chairman and Secretary was intended to deceive the public and falsely validate their illegal actions. It was also claimed that the State Chairman’s name was used without his awareness or permission to send out a condolence message using forged documents. He stated that the suspension of the offending members would take effect immediately. He listed the names of the suspended executive members, including Chief Tony Alile, Organizing Secretary; Mr. Chris Ojiekere, Publicity Secretary; Mr. Benjamin Omonzokpia, Youth Leader; and Mrs. Yami Jatto, a woman leader, mentioned that the state SDP chairman stated that the suspension of the officials aligns with the party’s constitutional provisions. He noted, “The Edo State Working Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has implemented strict disciplinary measures against four members for serious breaches of Article 19, Sections 19.1, 19.2, and 19.3 of the Party’s Constitution. Their behavior has been assessed as harmful to the party’s unity, integrity, and orderly operations.” The party officials have been suspended right away. He claimed that they traveled to Abuja with two subordinates without securing the required authorization from the State Chairman. Obayagbon expressed concern over the behavior of Chief Tony Alile and Mr. Chris Ojiekere, who joined the party in April 2025, claiming they engaged in acts of disobedience, forgery, and actions against the party’s interests. He argued that their activities were aimed at damaging the party’s reputation and undermining its legally established leadership. Furthermore, he alleged that the suspended members were collaborating with a group of opportunistic politicians known for making deals during election periods to benefit themselves at the party’s expense. He noted that this alliance had revived in anticipation of the upcoming bye-election in August 2025, intending to seize control of the party for personal political gain. Such behaviors, he asserted, are severe violations of the SDP Constitution and contradict the party’s guiding principles. The SDP, Edo State Chapter, is steadfast in its dedication to maintaining internal democracy, discipline, and cohesion. “The party will not accept any actions that could compromise its integrity, legality, or shared vision,” he stated. According to DAILY POST, it was reported that some party members had allegedly wrongfully suspended the party chairman, Elder Felix Obayagbon, and the secretary, Mr. Hycenth Esangbedo.
