Since a few days, des opérations de déguerpissement are conducted at Dakar and inside the country, under the impulse of the Ministry of the Interior. The stated objective is to put an end to the anarchic occupation of the public highway and the savage urbanization, which has long been denounced by many citizens. In effect, the capital suffocates: street vendors, gargotiers, “tabliers” and other small traders settle on the sidewalks, to the detriment of the circulation, the hygiene and the living environment. This urban disorder creates a feeling of suffocation among the Dakarois, tired of living in a city that has become almost uninhabitable. If confronting this anarchy is indispensable, the way in which the de-escalation operations are currently being conducted leaves much to be desired. They are neither operative nor effective in the long term. Recent history has proved this: all previous regimes have launched such operations, but they have never produced lasting results.
