The mission of the BHI is to foster economic engagement and create opportunities for students across Greater Miami’s tourism sector. The tourism and hospitality industry plays a significant role in Miami-Dade County, contributing over $20 billion each year to the local economy. This highlights the essential need for a skilled workforce to fill vital roles in the sector. “Our future relies on the development of an energetic and passionate tourism and hospitality workforce, and the newly formed board of directors will assist in forming a strategic plan to offer students optimal opportunities for success in Miami-Dade’s prominent visitor industry,” stated GMCVB President & CEO David Whitaker. The expanded board will focus on initiatives like increasing scholarships, starting workforce training programs, and collaborating with local businesses to create more equitable chances within Greater Miami’s hospitality industry. Desmond Alufohai, the chair of the BHI board of directors, remarked, “There are few experiences more fulfilling than inspiring individuals to embrace new challenges and witnessing their growth and broader perspectives.” “This sector brings together numerous individuals within our community, and our organization’s success will depend on our ability to discover innovative methods to inform those who may not know about the wide range of career opportunities in the industry, as well as to provide education on the professional development paths they can explore.” BHI will host its yearly H.O.T. Challenge Golf Tournament on May 9 in Aventura to generate scholarship funds supporting career education in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Taking place at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa, the H.O.T. Challenge brings together top industry leaders for exceptional golfing and networking opportunities. The yearly tournament has a history of 32 years, during which it has generated over $3.5 million and provided 450 scholarships for students aiming for careers in hospitality within Miami-Dade County.
