Eze Matthew Chiedozie Nwokoma, the Traditional Ruler of the Umuokane autonomous community in Ohaji-Egbema LGA, Imo State, has denounced attempts to create division and conflict within his community. He has accused certain individuals of trying to establish a rival throne without adhering to the community’s traditional procedures. This action, he believes, undermines his role as the chief guardian of the community, a position granted to him by the people in accordance with their customs. Addressing local journalists about recent events in his palace, Eze Nwokoma stated that while there’s nothing wrong with forming a new autonomous community, the improper imposition of a new throne over an existing one contradicts longstanding community customs. He emphasized that the pursuit of a new autonomous community should involve the whole community, with consultations by the Elders-in-Council and consideration of the ancestors’ approval to avoid provoking their disfavor. He reaffirmed that each traditional kingship is deeply connected to the ancestors, who upheld the reverence associated with the throne, and would disapprove of its violation for personal gain. Eze Nwokoma also shared that he became the traditional leader not by his own ambition but as a result of the collective desire of his people, which led him to resign from the Nigeria Police Force. Following the passing of his elder brother, he stated that succession to the throne is based on hereditary principles, which he believes have remained unchanged. He emphasized that his reign has brought about relative peace to his people by enhancing security and honoring the significance of the throne. He asserted that his community is one of the few in the State that has not experienced any security issues. He promised to prevent individuals with ulterior motives from disrupting the established peace, indicating he would not hesitate to call upon the ancestors for support. “I want to clarify that we have one Umuokane Autonomous Community and our Traditional Ruler is HRM, Eze Dr. Matthew Chiedozie Nwokoma (Okaome the 4th). We are still awaiting the State Government’s approval for any additional Autonomous Communities, as we desire further development for Umuokane. I will welcome any newly created autonomous community that is backed by legitimate documentation and is proposed sincerely. However, having an autonomous community imposed on us could create significant turmoil.” We desire a refreshing breeze that will create a sense of comfort and closeness among us. Conflict comes with a high cost and brings significant harm, while peace holds immense value. “I will not undermine or disregard the achievements of the community.” The esteemed Chiefs, cabinet officials, PG, village leaders, and youth president are collaborating harmoniously with me, and the citizens appreciate my governance style and peaceful demeanor. “At present, more than 40 percent of Ohaji residents have sought refuge in Umuokane due to its serenity,” emphasized Eze Nwokoma. Additionally, the Town Union President-General, Sir Bethel Enyinna, confirmed that Eze Nwokoma continues to lead the community, highlighting his commitment to transparent leadership. Other leaders, Chief Ohaji Akujuobi and Nicholas Ekeh, also noted that they would support any legitimate, peaceful, and traditional efforts aimed at establishing further autonomy within Umuokane.
