The Kano State Government has mandated all 4203 local government areas (LGAs) to contribute N15.2 million each, amounting to a total of N670 million, for the purchase and repair of vehicles for the Kano Emirate Council, overseen by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. A letter dated March 25, 2025, that recently appeared on social media, disclosed that the funds will be deducted from the State/Local Government Joint Account and given to Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd, a private company hired to supply four new vehicles and refurbish two classic ones. The letter, titled “Conveyance of Approval for the Release of Funds,” was signed by Abubakar S. Dabo, the Director of Local Government Inspection, acting on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs. It stated, “I am directed to convey Government’s approval for the release of the aggregate sum of N15,227,272.72 per LGA… to repair 2 vehicles and supply 4 vehicles to the Kano Emirate Council through Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd.” Details of the approved expenditure show that the N670 million will finance: the full refurbishment of a 1969 Rolls Royce (DH 420), the restoration of a Cadillac limousine, and the procurement of four brand-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR (full option) vehicles. The letter additionally directed all LGA chairpersons to follow due processes meticulously when disbursing funds and carrying out the directive. This announcement has generated varied reactions on social media, with some critics raising concerns about the timing and importance of this spending, especially in light of the financial constraints and inadequate infrastructure in many local governments. A user named Mubashshir Saidu commented: “If this is accurate, then it amounts to oppression!!!” Leaders must consistently be mindful of the circumstances of everyday citizens! What issues are there concerning Emir Sanusi or his palace and car? “Let’s go, everyone.” On the other hand, some supporters of the decision argue that it demonstrates the government’s desire to rejuvenate the dignity and effectiveness of the Kano Emirate after the recent reinstatement of Emir Sanusi II. As of the time of this report, there has been no official comment from the Kano State Government regarding the public discussion.
