The Premier League will implement semi-automated offside technology starting Saturday, April 12, 2025, as stated in an announcement made on the official Premier League website. On Tuesday, the Premier League announced that it will implement semi-automated offside technology on Saturday, April 12 (Match Round 32). This follows tests conducted without live play in the Premier League and its use during this season’s FA Cup matches. The semi-automated offside technology streamlines critical aspects of offside decision-making to assist the video assistant referee (VAR). It utilizes optical player tracking to accurately position the virtual offside line and creates virtual graphics to enhance the fan experience both in-stadium and during broadcasts. This new system is designed to uphold the integrity of offside rulings while improving the speed, efficiency, and consistency of such decisions. The Premier League collaborated with PGMOL and Genius Sports, a sports data and technology firm, to develop this new technology.
