​The Rufai family has expressed their heartfelt thanks as they receive an outpouring of tributes for the late Super Eagles legend.    

 

The family of the late Prince Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai has conveyed their heartfelt thanks to Nigerians both at home and around the world for the immense outpouring of affection and condolences after the death of the celebrated former Super Eagles goalkeeper. In a formal statement issued on Friday, the Rufai family announced that the 61-year-old football icon passed away peacefully at 6am on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a short illness. The family expressed that his passing is a significant loss, yet they are grateful to God for the life he led and the international acclaim he brought to Nigeria through his involvement in football. “Even though we are devastated and surprised by his unexpected death, we truly appreciate God for the remarkable life He bestowed upon Prince Peter Rufai, which was highlighted by a successful football career that earned him global fame,” the statement stated. Peter Rufai’s football journey included stints in five different countries. Known for his achievements as Nigeria’s inaugural FIFA World Cup goalkeeper, having participated in the tournaments of USA ’94 and France ’98, Rufai had a lengthy and international career. He represented the Super Eagles 66 times, participated in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s AFCON triumph in Tunisia in 1994. In an uncommon achievement for a goalkeeper, he netted a goal while representing his national team. He played for Nigeria’s Sharks of Port Harcourt before moving on to various teams in Benin Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain during his club career. His family expresses gratitude to Nigerians and is in the process of arranging funeral plans.
