The day was cut short after concerned parents dismissed learners from Kwa-Thema schools today. Some schools have gone without electricity for weeks, and the parents believe that a resolution needs to be found soon.
On Monday, parents staged protests at the Kwa-Thema Customer Care Centre, hoping the situation would change.
The affected schools include Zimisele, Nkabinde, Muzomsha, Zamani, Ntokozweni and Tlakula.
“Lack of electricity affects secondary schools more because some of them use projectors instead of chalkboards. The schools cannot do administrative work without electricity.
“The toilet pumps at Laban Mohlabi Comprehensive are electrical. What will happen without electricity?
“Some schools were due to write assessments on Friday, but because there is no electricity they can’t do so,” explained
Zakhele Jiyane, school governing body (SGB) member at Muzomsha Primary School. He said that the learners were so frustrated that they were calling each other out of school today.
Jiyane added that the SGBs were told not to interfere in the process between the metro and the GDE. African Reporter has confirmation the CoE disconnected electricity to the schools because of non-payment.
Comment is awaited from the Gauteng Department of Education. This is a developing story.
