Dakar received special attention on Thursday as part of World Radio Day, hosting the second Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction. This two-day event is organized under the evocative theme of “Radio at the heart of communities: together facing the climate challenge”. On the joint initiative of the African Broadcasting Union (UAR), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and Radio Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS), this summit brings together media professionals, scientists, political leaders and civil society actors. Their main objective is to underline the importance of the radio media in raising awareness and mobilising around climate issues. The organisers stress the irreplaceable capacity of the radio to inform and educate a large audience, particularly in rural areas where its resilience and portability are major assets. Radio is distinguished by its ability to reach remote communities, thus reinforcing its crucial role in the dissemination of vital information on climate change. This summit aims to exchange and share experiences on the use of radio as a vehicle for raising awareness of the climate emergency. It also proposes to strengthen the skills of radio professionals in climate reporting and to promote synergy between the various actors engaged in the fight against climate change.
