The Zamfara government has announced that the parallel assembly is unlawful and has invalidated its resolutions.

The Zamfara State Government has condemned the actions of a faction of suspended lawmakers who recently convened a legislative session, labeling it unconstitutional and illegal. This statement follows the formation of a parallel assembly led by Bashar Aliyu (PDP-Gummi I), which defies the authority of the officially recognized Speaker of the Zamfara House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki (PDP-Zurmi South). The suspended lawmakers, who met in Gusau, criticized Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration for its perceived inadequacies in security and infrastructure.

During a press conference in Gusau on Friday, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Iliyasu Maijega, rejected the claims of the faction and asserted that their resolutions have no legal standing. “There is only one legitimate Zamfara State House of Assembly, and it is led by Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki,” Maijega stated. He denounced the actions of the suspended lawmakers, warning that their effort to establish a separate legislative body breaches the Nigerian Constitution and a standing court order. He deemed all accusations made by the so-called parallel assembly as unfounded and legally void. Maijega called on the public to disregard any announcements or decisions from this parallel group, emphasizing that the issue is currently under judicial review. “Any lawmaker affiliated with this parallel assembly is acting unlawfully. Their resolutions lack recognition and legal support,” he added.
