‘They’re looking for popularity, funding’ – Reps member blasts CSOs opposing Electoral Act

Chairman, House Committee on Electoral Matters, Adebayo Balogun, has lashed out at Civil Society Organizations opposing the Electoral Act Amendment.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, Balogun said they were rather looking to make a name for themselves and funding.

This comes after President Bola Tinubu signed into law the controversial Electoral Act which was passed by the National Assembly.

DAILY POST reports that the Senate on Tuesday approved electronic transmission of election results, with manual collation retained as a backup

Meanwhile, Civil Society Organizations and some notable opposition politicians have been staging protests at the gate of the National Assembly demanding real-time electronic transmission of election results as against the manual collation.

Airing his opinion on the Amended Electoral Act, Balogun said, “Civil Societies fighting against the Electoral Act are looking to make a name for themselves. They are looking for funding.

“We had to remove the real-time because a lot of people thought they would be viewing the election results on a screen, and if this didn’t happen, there would be a crisis.”

“So, as responsible legislators, we had to do something. It’s not about the Senate versus the House of Representatives but about doing the right thing. We Rep members saw reasons to what the Senate did.”
