A joint operation carried out this Thursday at around 15h by the Brigade de Recherches du Commissariat de Kédougou and the NGO Égale Sénégal, specialized in the fight against wildlife crime, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals for the crime of detention of products derived from protected animals. The suspects were apprehended at the Sankara Hotel while preparing to illegally sell five pairs of wild animals, including four leopards and one hyena. (The operation was launched following an intelligence signalling an imminent transaction on the spot.) A team was quickly dispatched and the arrests took place without incident. In addition to the men, the police also seized a seven-seater vehicle and three motorcycles used by the traffickers. The individuals arrested were placed in custody for the detention, circulation and attempted commercialisation of products of protected species. After being informed, the national parks’ staff visited the site to make use of the facilities. The investigation is continuing in order to identify possible accomplices and dismantle the network involved.
