L’Université Gaston Berger (UGB) is going through a period of deep crisis after the suicide of Matar Diagne, a master student found hanging in her room. According to Professor Ibrahima Giroux, a teacher of cognitive psychology, more than a hundred students suffer from a profound malaise. To respond to this urgency, a group therapy was organised by the Réseau santé mentale dans un amphithéâtre de l’UFR Civilisations, Religions, Arts et Communication. “The trauma is so visible and invasive that a group therapy had to be organised in order to help the most affected students and encourage the liberation of speech”, explains Dr Giroux. In view of the extent of the malaise, he promised to receive students until 2 a.m., particularly those who had been directly in contact with Matar Diagne or who had experienced the situation in person. One of them, under the guise of anonymity, confided: “I am constantly made to remark on my physical or psychological profile. I suffer. I no longer have confidence in myself and I no longer know who to confide in. As I come from an English-speaking background, I have a very difficult time integrating into the UGB”.
