Kwa-Thema – Doctor Nxele qualified for the Comrades Marathon after completing his first 42km race, the Alan Robb Marathon, on April 27.
The avid runner usually competes in 10km and 15km races, but decided to challenge himself.
“I took a chance and did something different. And it paid off,” he explained.
Nxele finished 14th in his age group, men aged 40 to 49, and came 22nd overall. The runner said he had no coach while preparing for the race.
“It was a tough group to be in if you consider that 14 of the people in the first 22 were all in my category,” he said, explaining that he is excited to run in the Comrades despite his challenges.
“I have used the same pair of running shoes to train and compete. I could do with better equipment, but I am still happy to go there,” he said.
Nxele will start the race in the B stream on June 8 in KwaZulu-Natal.
