The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected, this Friday, the appeal filed by Tik Tok to contest an imminent ban on American soil. The decision marks a major turning point for the application, very popular with its 170 million users in the United States, which is forced to separate from its parent company, Byte Dance, by 19 January 2025. The US authorities invoke national security concerns, suspecting TikTok of allowing the Chinese government to access the data of American users, due to Chinese laws obliging companies to collaborate with intelligence services. If the Supreme Court’s decision is final, the US government must now intervene to remove TikTok from downloading platforms. The current users will be able to keep the application, but without the possibility of updating it, which will make it progressively unusable. However, the story of Tik Tok in the United States is not over. Donald Trump, who has modified his position since his attempted ban in 2020, could sign a decree to postpone the deadline for sale of the application and avoid its withdrawal.
