Le commerçant Birahim Sy, aged 39 years and established at the Sandaga market, was defended yesterday before the parquet by the Dakar Brigade de recherches. He is being prosecuted for endangering the life of others, fraud on the nature of the product and forgery to the detriment of society. According to the newspaper Libération, it all started with an anonymous report denouncing the sale of expired dates on the market. A descente des gendarmes in the magazine of the mis en cause allowed the discovery of twelve cartons of damaged dates. More serious still, some packaging showed signs of falsification of the expiry dates. During his interrogation, Birahim Sy acknowledged having already sold a part of the merchandise, while admitting that about 70 cartons of expired dates were still in his warehouse. In an attempt to clear himself, he brought an action against a Turkish supplier whom he accused of having delivered nonconforming products. The case, followed closely by the journal Libération, highlighted the health risks linked to the sale of food products unfit for consumption.
