​WAFCON 2024: Ghana Defeats South Africa in Penalty Shootout for Third Place    

 

The Ghana Black Queens triumphed over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the third-place match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations held on Friday. After a goalless 90 minutes, Ghana secured a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout. South Africa initially took the lead in the 45th minute when Nonhlanhla Mthandi capitalized on a mistake by the Ghanaian goalkeeper. However, Kusi Alice leveled the score for Ghana in the 67th minute with a header from a cross. With neither team able to score again, the match proceeded to penalties, which Ghana won. In other news, the final of this year’s WAFCON is set for Saturday, featuring Nigeria’s Super Falcons against the host nation, Morocco. The Falcons advanced to the final by defeating South Africa 2-1, while Morocco overcame Ghana in penalties after a 1-1 draw.
