Former Nigeria international Desire Oparanozie has called on the Super Falcons to enhance their attacking performance, despite starting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) this year on a strong note. The Super Falcons won their opening match against Tunisia 3-0, with goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo. However, the team missed several opportunities to score more, including a notable miss by defender Osinachi Ohale who shot over the bar with an open net ahead of her. “It was a convincing win, but we had more chances to score that we didn’t capitalize on, and that’s an area we need to improve,” Oparanozie, who is providing commentary for this year’s WAFCON, commented to Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. The four-time WAFCON champion praised the team’s strong defense and midfield performance, stating, “We controlled the match, our defense was solid, our midfield was dominant, and our attack was active, but we need to refine those finishing touches during training to connect better in those critical moments.” The Super Falcons are looking to enhance their scoring as they prepare to face Botswana in their second group match on Thursday, following Botswana’s 1-0 loss to Algeria in their opener. This will mark the second encounter between the Super Falcons and Botswana at the WAFCON, the first being a 2-0 victory for Nigeria during the group phase of the 2022 tournament. The Super Falcons aim to secure their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, having last won it in 2018; they finished fourth in the 2022 tournament in Morocco after losing the third-place match to Zambia 1-0.
